Dick Smiths Population Puzzle
Language: English
File Size: 910MB
File Type: AvI

видео

Цитата:
What does it take to spark a change in national attitudes? High profile entrepreneur Dick Smith is on a crusade to influence one of the biggest public policy issues facing the country - unplanned population growth.

“Like many Australians, Dick Smith hadn’t thought much about how our rising population might be affecting the nation. He hadn’t joined the dots connecting our record levels of population growth with increased congestion, property prices and hospital queues.
He just accepted the mantra that a Big Australia was a Good Australia. But a fateful phone call from Dick’s daughter, Jenny, changed everything. Jenny asked her father why nobody was talking about population in the lead up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. After all, she queried, wasn’t it people who created carbon emissions? Population was the elephant in the room that no one was discussing. And it set Dick off on a six-month journey of discovery to explore how rising population was changing Australia and the world. The answers, as revealed in the film, came as a shock.
“We’re undertaking an unplanned social experiment that is literally changing our way of life” says Dick. What he discovered was that for most Australians, population growth was most likely means a lower standard of living. And despite the pressure it’s placing on our infrastructure and environment, no one really has a plan to deal with the massive increase in population we’ve been experiencing in recent years.
“This is the most important issue I have ever undertaken in my life,” says Dick. “I won’t rest until we have a proper plan in place that informs Australians just how many people we can sustainably support in this country.”

BBC - Wonders Of The Solar System: Empire Of The Sun (2010)
Format: avi
Size: 550 Mb

Цитата:
In this first episode Brian explores the powerhouse of them all, the sun. In India he witnesses a total solar eclipse - when the link to the light and heat that sustains us is cut off for a few precious minutes. But heat and light are not the only power of the sun over the solar system. In Norway, Brian watches the battle between the sun's wind and earth, as the night sky glows with the northern lights. Beyond earth, the solar wind continues, creating dazzling aurora on other planets. Brian makes contact with Voyager, a probe that has been travelling since its launch 30 years ago. Now 14 billion kilometres away, Voyager has just detected the solar wind is beginning to peter out. But even here we haven't reached the end of the sun's rule. Brian explains how its greatest power, gravity, reaches out for hundreds of billions of kilometres, where the lightest gravitational touch encircles our solar system in a mysterious cloud of comets.

Theories of Human Development (Video)
Format: avi
Size: 3,28 Gb

Цитата:
The six major theories have had a pervasive impact on the way we, both scientists and the general public, see ourselves. They are:
Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory. The lectures discuss this theory, the earliest of the six, including such concepts as the Oedipus Complex and Freud’s five stages of psycho-sexual development. Although now widely disputed, Freudian thinking is deeply imbedded in our culture and constantly influences our view of human nature.
Erik Erikson’s Psycho-Social Theory. This is the theory that gave rise to the term "identity crisis." Erikson was the first to propose that the "stages" of human development spanned our entire lives, not just childhood. His ideas heavily influenced the study of personality development, especially in adolescence and adulthood.
John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s Integrated Attachment Theory. This was the first theory to focus primarily on the formation of parent-child relationships. It explains the connection between relationships that occur early in our lives and those that happen later, including romantic ones. Attachment theory has generated thousands of scientific studies, and has led to changes in many childcare policies, such as those allowing parents to stay with their children in hospitals.
Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory. This theory modified traditional learning theory developed by such behaviorists as B. F. Skinner, which was based on stimulus-response relationships. It considered learning to be no different among infants, children, adults, or even animals. Bandura’s approach is influential in such areas as the effect of media violence on children, and the treatment of problem behaviors and disorders.
Jean Piaget’s Cognitive-Developmental Theory. Piaget’s influence created a revolution in human development theory. He proposed the existence of four major stages, or "periods," during which children and adolescents master the ability to use symbols and to reason in abstract ways. This has been the most influential of the six major theories. In the 1970s and 1980s, it completely dominated the study of child development.
Lev Vygotsky’s Cognitive-Mediation Theory. Alone among the major theorists, Vygotsky believed that learning came first, and caused development. He theorized that learning is a social process in which teachers, adults, and other children form supportive "scaffolding" on which each child can gradually master new skills. Vygotsky’s views have had a large impact on educators.
Early Theorists: Locke, Rousseau, and even Darwin
To give you the best understanding of these theories, this course also explores the general history of the study of child development. It touches on the work of other important researchers, such as John Watson of Johns Hopkins University, who developed behaviorism, and Arnold Gesell of Yale, from whose work sprang such well-worn phrases as "just going through a stage" and "the terrible twos."
Professor Watson also discusses the era of observational research on children, which marked the beginnings of child study as a true science. This period was pioneered by scientists who began publishing detailed accounts of the development of their own children. These early "baby biographers" included Alfred Binet, who first developed intelligence testing in France, and even Charles Darwin.
You may be struck not only by how much we have learned about child development, but also by how much our attitudes toward children have changed. Until the beginning of the 19th century, there was no interest in child study and, in fact, no concern for children. Such factors as poverty and high infant mortality created an atmosphere in which children were barely tolerated, or used for labor.
In Paris in 1750, 33 percent of all newborns were left in foundling homes or on doorsteps; most died. In England, boys and girls as young as four were often sent to work in mines.
You will see how attitudes toward children gradually improved, due mostly to the efforts of physicians and religious leaders. And you will appreciate the tremendous contribution that two renowned philosophers, John Locke (1632–1704) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778), have made to the field of child development. Their ideas about children—whether they are inherently good or bad, or whether they actively shape their environments or passively react to stimuli—still form much of the basis of our modern theories.
The lessons of this course are not simply about learning, behavior, and relationships in youth, but at any age. Taken as a whole, they provide our best answers to the questions of human nature—how we learn, adapt, and become who we are at every stage in life.

Michael Wood’s Story of England – Domesday to Magna Carta (2010)
Format: avi
Size: 600 Mb

Цитата:
Historian Michael Wood shines an intimate light on the lives of ordinary people over the last 2,000 years in this fascinating new series. Set in the Leicestershire village of Kibworth, the series tells the story of one place through the whole of English history, with the people – not the rulers – at the centre of the narrative.

Kibworth is modern Britain in miniature: located in the very heart of England and split now by the A6, it’s the kind of place you could drive through without giving it a second thought. But, like most places in England, scrape just beneath the surface and you discover an incredibly rich historical tapestry.

The first episode delves into the roots of the Kibworth community, its ancestors and landscape, exploring the deep past that shaped the village and its people. With the help of the local people and using archaeology, landscape language and
DNA, Michael begins to uncover the lost history of the first thousand years of the village.

More than 250 villagers unite in digging up their own back gardens to unearth artefacts and look into the history that’s all around them. A staggering 55 test pits were dug over one weekend, the largest number ever in a single place, and a
wealth of evidence discovered: pottery from the Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods all the way through to the Middle Ages; debris of Georgian coaching inns; frame knitters’ workshops; and railway navvies’ camps.

In Michael Wood’s Story Of England the stage is set. From the Romans to the Vikings, from the Black Death to the civil war, this series lays bare a history peopled by fascinating real-life characters, including Tudor teachers, highwaymen, Suffragettes and First World War soldiers.

The Adventure of English
Format / Quality: AVI
Size: 2,7 GB

Melvyn Bragg travels through Britain to tell the story of how an insignificant German dialect, which only arrived in the country in the fifth century, evolved into a language which is now spoken and understood by more people than any other around the world. We trace English from its humble roots to its flowering in the writing of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
English is a global language. Every day, in cities all around the world, English is used in encounters between people of different countries. It is estimated that well over a thousand million people around the world speak, or have a working understanding of, English.
This is its story. It's a story that really reads like an adventure of extraordinary survival, invasion, near extinction on more than one occasion, and astonishing flexibility.
Engaging enough for 12 year olds to Senior citizens.

Globe Trekker TV Shows: New Zealand 2
Presenters: Ian Wright & Zay Harding
Publisher: Globe Trekker - 2010
Format / Quality: DVDRip
Size: 349 Mb

Language:English/Maori
Цитата:
Travellers Ian Wright and Zay Harding head out on individual expeditions to explore New Zealand and discover why its Maori name of "Aotearoa" - meaning “land of the long white cloud” - describes these romantic islands so well.

New Zealand is a land of unspoilt landscapes and immense natural beauty, with amazing extremes of climate and terrain. From rainforest to reef, and glacier to volcano, Ian and Zay explore the four corners of the country, taking in its Maori cultural heritage, empty wilderness, and bustling cities where even the skyscrapers are home to some of the world’s most extreme sports.

Starting in Wellington on the North Island, Zay enters the mysterious world of Lord of The Rings and visits the film locations where this box office blockbuster was made. In this thinly populated region some 23,000 locals took part in the film and Zay gets to meet a couple of characters involved its making along the way. Meanwhile, Ian hitches a ride in a 1950s house truck and makes his way down to the hot springs and thermal wonderland of Rotorua.

New Zealand’s economy was built on the sheep’s back, and with ten times more sheep than people in this country, shearing is an important skill here. Not surprisingly, a sheep-shearing contest is on the agenda for Zay where he meets the Masterton reigning champion, as well as a veteran of the competition, who now owns a truly individual bed & breakfast nearby.

Ian is welcomed into a Maori community, where he gets to experience tribal customs and ancient traditions at first-hand. The Maoris first came to New Zealand around thousand years ago, travelling hundreds of miles from the Polynesian islands of the South Pacific in large canoes. Zay meanwhile attends a Maori regatta in Ngaruawahia and finds out how the art of canoe paddling has been passed down through the generations.

Ian moves on to Christchurch and indulges in a nice relaxing punt down the river, which brings memories of England flooding back.

Zay, stays firmly on dry land where he joins in challenging game of rugby with New Zealand's national womens team: the formidable Black Ferns. After a thoroughly good slamming, he jumps on the Tranz Alpine Train and travels across the Southern Alps to the Hokitika Wild Foods Festival where it looks like his tastebuds are in for a real treat! Lucky Zay gets to sample sauteed sheep’s testicles, steamed fish eyes, delicious huhu grubs, and some tasty tongue. He decides to beat a hasty retreat and heads on out into the wilderness of Lake Te Anau and the Milford Track. After a two-day trek through beautiful forests, stopping off to admire secluded waterfalls, and fast-flowing rivers, Zay ends up beside the serene waters of Milford Sound – a tranquil paradise.

Ian, meanwhile, is finishing up an intrepid trek of his own, heading out to the Fox Glacier, where he gets to marvel at some of the most stunning scenery New Zealand has to offer.
