Talk is Cheap begins with this telling observation about irony and proceeds to argue that such "unplain speaking" is fundamentally embedded in the way we now talk. Author John Haiman traces this sea-change in our use of language to the emergence of a postmodern "divided self" who is hyper-conscious that what he or she is saying has been said before; "cheap talk" thus allows us to distance ourselves from a social role with which we are uncomfortable. Suzette Haden Elgin is a specialist in applied psycholinguistics and the founder and director of the Ozark Center for Language Studies, and has written many language-related bestsellers, such as the whole Gentle Art of Verbal Defense series and How to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable. And now she's come out with a new book on language, The Language Imperative, to tackle the issue of multilingualism. She suggests that people in the U.S. suffer a fair amount of confusion over the power and importance of languages. And she asks a number of questions, as well, such as "Is it a good or a bad idea for people in this country to have command of two languages?", Should we have an international language, or is this a silly (or perhaps dangerous) idea?", and "Do languages have the power to shape our lives as individuals and as a nation?"

She sets out to establish the importance of multilingualism, to explain why there is so much confusion and contradiction when it comes to multilingualism, and to discuss the effects of multilingualism on individuals and communities. Elgin did a tremendous amount of research (from traditional sources such as journals and studies, as well as from hundreds of multilinguals around the world). She concludes that human languages do structure and influence how people think and perceive; that the link between language and culture is so strong that if you take away the language, the culture is lost; and ultimately, that multilingualism is terrifically valuable, and should be encouraged in all ways. Elgin fleshes out her ideas with interviews and examples, and presents all the sides that weigh in on these issues. This volume has its origins in a theme session entitled: “Lexical and Grammatical Classification: Same or Diferent?” organized by the editors at the Fifth
International Cognitive Linguistics Conference held at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam on July 18th, 1997. We have included almost all of the theme session presentations as well as additional papers from that conference and some invited contributions. All the analyses in this volume explore the relationship between lexical and grammatical categories. Some illustrate the close interaction between lexical and grammatical categories in interpreting linguistic expressions; some provide data that call into question the strict dichotomy between lexicon and grammar that is sometimes assumed, which in turn suggests the need to question the value of the dichotomy itself.

"Основная часть работы посвящена проблеме слова – его структуре, асимметрии его сторон – означаемого и означающего, а также его функционированию в дискурсе. Анализируются типы и способы образования новых слов (аффиксация, словосложение, сращение и субстантивация словосочетаний, несобственная и обратная деривация, лексикализация грамматических форм, конверсия) и морфологический состав готовых слов. Показываются принципиальные различия между морфологической и словообразовательной структурой слова и, соответственно, между методами морфологического и словообразовательного анализа. Рассматривается соотношение морфологической структуры существительных и прилагательных, а также имен и глаголов. Исследование выполнено на материале испанского языка. Для сравнения привлекаются другие романские языки, а также существенно более продвинувшийся по пути к аналитизму английский язык.
Особое внимание уделено сопоставлению морфологической структуры испанских имен и глаголов, обнаруживающих разную меру аналитизма, и системе времен в испанском языке."
