Preferred Argument Structure: Grammar As Architecture for Function (Studies in Discourse and Grammar)

Studies in Discourse and Grammar is a monograph series providing a forum for
research on grammar as it emerges from and is accounted for by discourse
contexts. The assumption underlying the series is that corpora reflecting
language as it is actually used are necessary, not only for the verification of
grammatical analyses, but also for understanding how the regularities we think
of as grammar emerge from communicative needs.
Research in discourse and grammar draws upon both spoken and written
corpora, and it is typically, though not necessarily, quantitative.Monographs in
the series propose explanations for grammatical regularities in terms of recurrent
discourse patterns, which reflect communicative needs, both informational
and socio-cultural.

Request Sequences: The Intersection of Grammar, Interaction And Social Context (Studies in Discourse and Grammar)
Author: Carmen Taleghani-nikazm

Language: English
Format: .pdf

This monograph provides a micro-analytic description of instances of requests in everyday German conversation. Using the framework of CA, the study systematically analyzes the grammatical and syntactical structure of the request-turn and its response and of the conversational exchanges before and within the request base sequence, and the placement of the request sequence within the larger social interaction. Through an empirical analysis of individual cases of request sequences in German, the monograph describes in detail: (a) how speakers employ grammar and syntax as resources to construct turns at talk and accomplish the social action of request; (b) how speakers use grammatical and syntactical forms of the language to coordinate the production of the social action of requests; © how speakers use grammar and syntax as interactional resources to manage affiliative and remedial work (i.e., face work) when performing delicate social actions such as requests; and (d) how the context of the request activity impacts the grammatical and syntactical constructions of speakers’ utterances. Additionally, the monograph demonstrates that both the grammatical construction of turns and their placement within the talk are oriented to the sequential context of the interaction.

Point of View and Grammar: Structural Patterns and Subjectivity in American English Conversation (Studies in Discourse and Grammar)
Author: Joanne Scheibman
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
Publication Date: 2002-12
Number Of Pages: 187
Quality: Excellent
Language: English
Format: .pdf
Size: 3.4mb

Цитата:
This book proposes that subjective expression shapes grammatical and lexical patterning in American English conversation. Analyses of structural and functional properties of English conversational utterances indicate that the most frequent combinations of subject, tense, and verb type are those that are used by speakers to personalize their contributions, not to present unmediated descriptions of the world. These findings are informed by current research and practices in linguistics which argue that the emergence, or conventionalization, of linguistic structure is related to the frequency with which speakers use expressions in discourse. The use of conversational data in grammatical analysis illustrates the local and contingent nature of grammar in use and also raises theoretical questions concerning the coherence of linguistic categories, the viability of maintaining a distinction between semantic and pragmatic meaning in analytical practice, and the structural and social interplay of speaker point of view and participant interaction in discourse.

Title: Queerly Phrased: Language, Gender, and Sexuality (Oxford Studies in Sociolinguistics)
Authors: Anna Livia, Kira Hall
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Publication Date: 1997-11-20
Number Of Pages: 480
Quality: Excellent
Language: English
Format: .pdf
Size: 30mb

This pioneering collection of previously unpublished articles on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender language combines queer theory and feminist theory with the latest thinking on language and gender. The book expands the field well beyond the study of "gay slang" to consider gay dialects (such as Polari in England), early modern discourse on gay practices, and late twentieth-century descriptions of homosexuality. These essays examine the conversational patterns of queer speakers in a wide variety of settings, from women's friendship groups to university rap groups and electronic mail postings.
Taking a global--rather than regional--approach, the contributors herein study the language usage of sexually liminal communities in a variety of linguistic and cultural contexts, such as lesbian speakers of American Sign Language, Japanese gay male couples, Hindi-speaking hijras (eunuchs) in North India, Hausa-speaking 'yan daudu (feminine men) in Nigeria, and French and Yiddish gay groups. The most accessible and diverse collection of its kind, Queerly Phrased: Language, Gender, and Sexuality sets a new standard in the study of language's impact on the construction of sexuality.

Representing Time: An Essay on Temporality as Modality (Oxford Linguistics)
Author: Kasia M. Jaszczolt
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Publication Date: 2009-05-15
Number Of Pages: 320
Quality: Excellent
Language: English
Format: .pdf
Size: 1.2mb

Цитата:
Thinking and speaking about time is ridden with puzzles and paradoxes. How do human beings conceptualize time? Why, for example, does the availability of tense vary in different languages? How do the lines of information from tense, aspect, temporal adverbs, and context interact in the mind? Does time describe events? If real time does not flow, where do the concepts of the past, present and future come from? Are they basic concepts or are they composed out of more primitive constituents? And, finally, what is the semantics of expressions with temporal reference? This book offers a new approach to the representation of meaning of temporally-located utterances and discourses. Temporality, the author suggests, should be taken to mean degrees of certainty, understood in turn as degrees of acceptability concerning the eventuality referred to in the speaker's utterance. She presents theoretical arguments and empirical evidence from Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages to show that speakers represent the past, present, and future as degrees of epistemic modality. She argues that temporality can be subsumed under the general label of acceptability or attitude and, rather like the semantic category of evidentiality, founded on the strength of evidence. In the approach she develops, modality provides basic conceptual building blocks for the concept of time and at the same time semantic building blocks for representing temporal expressions in her framework of Default Semantics. Dr Jaszczolt sets the results of her research in the context of linguistic and philosophical work in semantics and pragmatics.

English Adjective Comparison - A historical perspective
Author: Victorina Gonzalez-diaz
Publisher: John Benjamins Pub Co
Publication date: 2008-08-15
ISBN: 902724815X
Number of pages: 252
Format / Quality: PDF

The present work contributes to a better understanding of the English system of degree by means of a study of a number of aspects in the evolution of adjective comparison that have so far either been considered controversial or not been accounted for at all. As will be shown, the diachronic aspects analysed will also have synchronic implications. Furthermore, unlike previous synchronic as well as diachronic accounts of adjective comparison, this monograph does not concentrate only on the ‘standard’ comparative strategies (i.e. inflectional and periphrastic forms), but also deals with double periphrastic comparatives, thus providing an analysis of the whole range of comparative structures in English.

Irony in Language and Thought assembles an interdisciplinary collection of seminal empirical and theoretical papers on irony in language and thought into one comprehensive book. A much-needed resource in the area of figurative language, this volume centers on a theme from cognitive science - that irony is a fundamental way of thinking about the human experience. The editors lend perspective in the form of opening and closing chapters, which enable readers to see how such works have furthered the field, as well as to inspire present and future scholars.

Featured articles focus on the following topics:

theories of irony, addressing primarily comprehension of its verbal form
context in irony comprehension
social functions of irony
the development of irony understanding
situational irony.

Scholars and students in psychology, linguistics, philosophy, literature, anthropology, artificial intelligence, art, and communications will consider this book an excellent resource. It serves as an ideal supplement in courses that present major ideas in language and thought.

Premodifiers in English: Their Structure and Significance
Author: Jim Feist
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Publication date: 2011
ISBN: 1107000866
Number of pages: 288
Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 1,6 MB

The order and behaviour of the premodifier (an adjective, or other modifying word that appears before a noun) has long been a puzzle to syntacticians and semanticists. Why can we say 'the actual red ball', but not 'the red actual ball'? And why, conversely, do some other premodifiers have free variation in sentences; for example we can say both 'German and English speakers' and 'English and German speakers'? Why do some premodifiers change the meaning of a phrase in some contexts; for example 'young man', can mean 'boyfriend', rather than 'man who is young'? Drawing on a corpus of over 4,000 examples of English premodifiers from a range of genres such as advertising, fiction and scientific texts, and across several varieties of English, this book synthesises research into premodifiers and provides a new explanation of their behaviour, order and use.

Impersonal Constructions: A cross-linguistic perspective
Author: Malchukov, Anna Siewierska
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
Publication date: 2011
ISBN: 9027205914
Number of pages: 650
Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 4 MB

This volume offers a much needed typological perspective on impersonal constructions, which are here viewed broadly as constructions lacking a referential subject. The contributions to this volume deal with all types of impersonality, namely constructions featuring nonagentive subjects, including those with experiential predicates (A-impersonals), presentational constructions with a notional subject deficient in topicality (T-impersonals), and constructions with a notional subject lacking in referential properties (R-impersonals), i.e. both meteo-constructions and man-constructions. The typological discussion benefits from a good coverage of impersonality in European languages, but also includes considerations of several African, American, South-East Asian, Australian, and Oceanic languages. The variation in the cross-linguistic realization of impersonality and the diachronic pathways leading to and from impersonality documented in this volume point to a novel perspective on impersonals as transitional structures or an intermediate stage of a more basic diachronic change be it from transitive to intransitive, or from active to passive, or participant-to event-centered construction.

Cognitive Linguistics: An Introduction
Author: Evans/Green
Publisher: Edinburgh University Press
Publication date: 2006
ISBN: 0748618325
Number of pages: 848
Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 4 MB

The book is divided into three parts (The cognitive linguistics enterprise; Cognitive semantics; and Cognitive approaches to grammar), and is therefore suitable for a range of different course types, both in terms of length and level, as well as in terms of focus. In addition to defining the field, the text also includes appropriate critical evaluation. Complementary and potentially competing approaches are explored both within the cognitive approach and beyond it.In particular, cognitive linguistics is compared and contrasted with formal approaches including Generative Grammar, formal approaches to semantics, and Relevance Theory.

depth what applied linguists actually do, and the types of research methods that are most frequently used in the field. By reading this book students will find the answers to four sets of basic questions:

What is applied linguistics, and what do applied linguists do?
Why do it? What is the point of applied linguistics?
How and why might I get involved in applied linguistics?
How to do it? What kinds of activities are involved in doing applied linguistic research?
