Publisher: International Reading Association and National Council of Teachers of English
Publication date: 2009
ISBN: 0872077764
Number of pages: 53

With this updated document, IRA and NCTE reaffirm their position that the primary purpose of assessment must be to improve teaching and learning for all students. Eleven core standards are presented and explained, and a helpful glossary makes this document suitable not only for educators but for parents, policymakers, school board members, and other stakeholders.

Case studies of large-scale national tests and smaller scale classroom assessments (particularly in the context of RTI, or Response to Intervention) are used to highlight how assessments in use today do or do not meet the standards.

The International Reading Association is the world's premier organization of literacy professionals. Our titles promote reading by providing professional development to continuously advance the quality of literacy instruction and research.

Research-based, classroom-tested, and peer-reviewed, IRA titles are among the highest quality tools that help literacy professionals do their jobs better.

Some of the many areas we publish in include:

-Comprehension
-Response To Intervention/Struggling Readers
-Early Literacy
-Adolescent Literacy
-Assessment
-Literacy Coaching
-Research And Policy

WAC for the New Millennium: Strategies for Continuing Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Programs
Author: Susan H. McLeod
Publisher: National Council of Teachers of English
Publication date: 2001
ISBN: 0814156487
Number of pages: 345
Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 16 MB

The writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) movement, now more than 25 years old, has remained a stable part of the educational landscape, outlasting other educational innovations by adapting to new educational initiatives. This collection of essays describes how WAC programs have adapted and continue to adapt to meet new challenges.

Respected WAC advocates and coeditors Susan McLeod, Eric Miraglia, Margot Soven, and Christopher Thaiss, along with other leading WAC educators including William Condon, David A. Jolliffe, Victor Villanueva, and David R. Russell, explain strategies for continuing WAC programs in an atmosphere of change; explore new avenues of collaboration, such as service learning and the linked-course curricula of learning communities; predict areas into which WAC programs need to move; and suggest new directions for research on writing across the curriculum. With a foreword by Elaine P. Maimon, this book celebrates WAC's achievements by highlighting the promise of its future.

The End of Books--or Books Without End?: Reading Interactive Narratives
Author: Jane Yellowlees Douglas
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
Publication date: September 6, 2001
ISBN: 0472088467
Number of pages: 216

Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 2,8 MB

Of all developments surrounding hypermedia, none has been as hotly or frequently debated as the conjunction of fiction and digital technology. J. Yellowlees Douglas considers the implications of this union. She looks at the new light that interactive narratives may shed on theories of reading and interpretation and the possibilities for hypertext novels, World Wide Web-based short stories, and cinematic, interactive narratives on CD-ROM. She confronts questions that are at the center of the current debate: Does an interactive story demand too much from readers? Does the concept of readerly choice destroy the integrity of an author's vision? Does interactivity turn reading fiction from "play" into "work"--too much work? Will hypertext fiction overtake the novel as a form of art or entertainment? And what might future interactive books look like?
The book examines criticism on interactive fiction from both proponents and skeptics and examines similarities and differences between print and hypertext fiction. It looks closely at critically acclaimed interactive works, including Stuart Moulthrop's Victory Garden and Michael Joyce's Afternoon: A Story that illuminate how these hypertext narratives "work." While she sees this as a still-evolving technology and medium, the author identifies possible developments for the future of storytelling from outstanding examples of Web-based fiction and CD-ROM narratives, possibilities that will enable narratives to both portray the world with greater realism an to transcend the boundaries of novels and films, character and plot alike.
Written to be accessible to a wide range of readers, this lively and accessibly-written volume will appeal to those interested in technology and cyberculture, as well as to readers familiar with literary criticism and modern fiction.
J. Yellowlees Douglas is the Director of the William and Grace Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication, University of Florida. She is the author of numerous articles and essays on the subject of hypertext and interactive literature.

Author: Sue Cave
Publisher: Brilliant Publications
Publication date: 2010
ISBN: 1905780729
Number of pages: 82
Format / Quality: PDF
Size: 2,8 MB

More Fun Ideas for Advancing Modern Foreign Languages in the Primary Classroom contains 77 activities for use with pupils who have been studying a new language for a while and are ready to progress beyond learning simple vocabulary and phrases. The fun activities will help pupils learn to manipulate the language, improve their decoding skills and discover how the new language functions at sentence level. The resulting recognition that language can be mastered is empowering. It enables creative communication and gives young learners a feeling of ownership of the language being learnt. The activities support the Year 5-6 objectives of the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages. They are suitable for most languages and for a wide range of language topics. The inherent rationale behind each activity is that it is enjoyable and interactive, challenging children's understanding of the language and furnishing them with a purpose to their learning. With activities ranging from 'Human alphabet' and 'Foreign language detectives' to 'Secret signal' and 'Be the teacher', you will never be stuck for ideas.
